African Drumming Ult will introduce the basics of drumming technique for the djembe, the hand drum of West Africa. From that foundation, we will take a journey into rhythm, unlocking the secrets of the traditional high-energy dance music of the African village. No experience is necessary. While village life offers many difficulties, the music is for celebration and joy. This ancient technology of the heart helps us to get out of our heads and into our bodies, lifting our spirits in the process. African rhythms were the ancestors of many styles of music we are familiar with, such as jazz, rock, and afro-cuban. Going back to the roots of music, and creating those rhythms together can be a very rewarding experience for beginners and experienced musicians alike. Ult has been teaching drumming for many years, and he employs exercises and learning techniques to help students feel the rhythms more deeply. He offers the rhythms as they were shared by his teachers from Guinea: Namory Keita, Famoudou Konate, and Mamady Keita. If you don’t own a djembe, there are a limited number available to use in class. Please contact Ult directly for more information at ult@mundane.org (603)933-2104
